NetWork Marketing VS. Pyramid Schemes

Network Marketing VS. Pyramid Schemes

Let me guess, somebody has just approached you and asked you to join their network marketing business and your instant thought was - is this one of those pyramid scams?

You made the right decision to do some research and be concerned, because pyramid schemes are illegal and can put you in to a lot of trouble. The good news is that network marketing or multi-level marketing is a legitimate and legal business model. On this page we will help you to identify the differences between network marketing and pyramid schemes, including a checklist of things to look for.

                                  -Pyramid Scheme (illegal scam)

In a more practical sense, probably the easiest way to identify pyramid schemes is firstly there is no legitimate product or service involved (ie you do not get a legitimate product in return for your initial investment). The second way to identify pyramid schemes is that you do not get a financial return unless you have successfully introduced a number of new recruits into the pyramid. Basically, pyramid schemes concentrate on the money that you could earn by recruiting new people into the pyramid and generally ignore the marketing and selling of any products or services.

-Network Marketing (legitimate, legal business model)

The concept behind network marketing is a distribution model that allows a company to sell their products directly to the consumer. Choosing to use a word of mouth approach (networking) instead of advertising through traditional streams (eg media). Therefore instead of paying the media for advertising, network marketing companies are structured to reward distributors through commission in return for selling their products and finding new customers.

-Another big distinction between pyramid schemes and network marketing is the fairness of good maths. To prevent network marketing companies from falling over like pyramid schemes (where people at the top make all the money and people at the bottom lose everything), there are restrictions placed in the network marketing company’s compensation plan that limit the number of people who can earn a commission off any given sale. Basically there are only so many ways you can split a dollar, therefore, network marketing commissions only travel so far. This not only makes the business model sustainable but also makes it fair in the sense that it doesn’t matter if you got in first or last, you have the same opportunity as everyone else.

So in summary, despite the fact that network marketing and pyramid schemes share a few similarities (i.e. the pyramid shaped business model shown in figure 1, and that in both you can recruit new members) network marketing is a legitimate business opportunity and one where you can earn a substantial legal income. You don’t have to take our word for it, network marketing is now being endorsed by a number of leading businessmen worldwide.

“If I lost everything and had to start again, I would find myself a great network marketing company and get to work!”
- Donald Trump (David Letterman Show)

-For your benefit we have put together a list of questions that you can ask yourself prior to signing the dotted line to help you identify a legitimate company from a fake one.

In particular, the following 2 questions:

Is there a legitimate product involved?
What do you get in return for your start up investment, other then the potential to earn good money? If you're not getting a product or service or if the training tools appear to be overpriced you could have discovered a scam. For more information about recommend products please refer to the "choosing the right product" chapter.

Do you get commissions based on product distribution or on recruitment?
If they are paying commissions based purely on recruitment, walk away now.

Additionally, you should also consider the following factors that might influence long term success.

-Does the company have a proven track record?
If the company has been around for a few years then there is a fair chance that governing bodies that police pyramid schemes have already pulled the business model apart and given them the ok. Publicly traded companies are normally your best bet.

-Is this a get rich quick scheme?
Although there is a lot of potential to earn very good money in network marketing very few have made it quick, most make their millions through consistent effort. So if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

7 Things I Hate About SEO: How I Put An End To My Content Marketing Misery!

Attempting to crack the SEO code in my opinion  is on of the biggest tail chasers in the Internet marketing industry.  Round and around, and around we go, where we stop…. no one knows!
I’ve been involved with internet marketing for the past 7 years and I’ve learned a great deal about the art of online marketing, especially SEO.   I was once a SEO fiend too… giving all of my backlinking praises to theroyal Google fanny.
Along the way I’ve gotten some bruises, fell down and scrapped my knees a few times but I’ve learned some hard lessons.  So I’ve decided to let you in on my love hate relationship with SEO and share how I’ve recovered from my SEO addiction.
By the way… if you’re a SEO fiend and you’re easily offended, leave your comments below and we’ll discuss it :)

It came out of nowhere:

Like most newbies, I was extremely overwhelmed when I first discovered the underground world of internet marketing and it didn’t take long for “SEO bandit” to grab hold of me.
While in its grips and doing its bidding, I discovered the following 7 things that I at first thought were going to be my ticket to traffic freedom… but they soon turned into my merciless slave drivers:
1.)  Endless Article Spinning – Oh… my… word!  I can not begin to express my extreme distaste for article spinning.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m sure there may be many of you who enjoy article spinning and get a good amount of traffic from doing it, but in my opinion article spinning is the biggest waste of time and money (if your outsourcing it).
When I first discovered article spinning starting out, I didn’t have a marketing budget to outsource it.  So I actually spent countless hours of my own time concocting so many sentence variations, synonyms, and nested spin syntax that I could start my own content mill.
Today I wouldn’t think of doing that!  I’ve traded it in for something much more effective.
In the same amount of time it takes to spin a 500 to 600 word article and plaster it all over cyber space, I’ve found that it’s more worth while to spend it writing a truly value packed article and doing some high profile content syndication on sites like:
2.) Backlinking - Now I will say that backlinking does play a valuable part in building up a sites authority and reputation, but it doesn’t take spewing out article spins to every article directory that’ll accept your articles to get them.
It’s more so about the quality of the backlinks rather than the quantity. I used to utilize countless renditions of article marketing spinners, gizmos and gadgets to get backlinks.
Yet another, huge waste of time and money.
Not only does the Google Gods frown upon them, in my experience it didn’t really do much to help my SEO traffic. More on that in a minute.
I now engage in a much more fun way of building backlinks to my site by actually participating in blog commenting.
This has truly become one of my favorite past times :)
Blog commenting not only allows you to build high quality backlinks, it’s also fun to engage with your fellow blogging community.  Not to mention the windfall of traffic it’ll gust your way.
4.)  Article Marketing Software - Let’s see here, 1… 2… 3… oh and let’s not forget #4, lol.  Yes, I’ve wasted money on 4 of these CPU draining monsters.  And for what?  The promise of hundreds of backlinks to my website, easier spinning, and increased traffic.
Ummm, that didn’t work out for me either.
Granted, it did automate the sign ups to the article directories (well… the 10% that would actually allow it to sign up).  And it did automate the article submission process (to about 10% of the sites that it actually signed up for).  And yeah, they even increased my backlinks… by about 1 to 3 links a week (and that was after blasting countless articles to over 1,000 directories daily).
In the end, I concluded that article marketing software is just about as useless as a dead smartphone without a charger.
Today I focus on syndicating my content on sites that actually send traffic like:
BlogEngage.com
Blokube.com
BetterNetworker.com
BizSugar.com (my personal fav ;) )
Business2Community.com and
Biznik.com
3.)  Keyword Research - Ohhhh, the hours of my life lost doing keyword research.  As a newbie just learning about internet marketing and SEO, I was a keyword research junkie.  And with the “analysis paralysis” I sometimes suffer from, it only made it worse.
I’ve just completely let go of the whole “keyword research” concept all together. Ugh! What a headache.  I’ll leave that to you niche site gurus ;)
All I focus on now is just creating truly original, useful and entertaining content with a killer headline :)
Such a simple concept and much more bearable.
5.)  Redundant Google Updates - Now this is really getting old.  I’m sooooo over it, lol.  First Panda, Then Penguin, and oh  yeah… did ya’ hear about the latest one?  Exact Match Domain Update.
Ya’ know, I’m pretty sure that Google’s gonna always be around, but with the constant changes that comes when it’s on “monthly cycle” and its constant mood swings… it’s really not as attractive as it used to be.
I’ve become a firm believer in the power of community and social traffic.  And from what I’m seeing, social media is definitely where it’s going to stay at.  So, my time is better spent with sites like:
  • JustTweet.com
  • SocialOomph.com and
  • WarriorForum.com
6.)  Submitting to Article Directories - Lol, this takes me wayyy back… to my earlydays in internet marketing… I’m talking like my first couple of months.
One of first traffic generation strategies that I ever heard about was submitting articles to various article directories.  I remember coming across a list of the top 50 article directories and actually manually signing up for them all and attempting to submit my one article to all of them.
#EpicFail
By the time I got to my 15th article directory, I’d discovered automatic article submission software.  Although at the time automatic submission software seemed like it was going my saving grace, it barely did anything to boost my traffic.
Today it’s a whole other ball game :)
It makes much more sense to focus on high-profile article marketing.  It’s all about getting as many people to see your content as possible, with the least amount of work as possible.
To put it simply:
Work smarter, Not harder
7.)  The whole SEO process - I actually used to like the whole SEO process.  I took pride in it.  Believe it or not, I was pretty darn good at it.  I could get nearly any keyword I targeted on the front page of Google within the first 24 to 48 hours.  There was even a time where I deemed myself a “SEO Geek”.
But after a while, I found myself feeling limited… restrained… like aunruly schizophrenic wrestling to get out of her straight jacket.
The SEO process is quite intricate and fascinating.  And yes, if done properly (given that you roll with Google’s punches) you can rake in a good amount of traffic from it.  But in my experience, SEO really diluted my creative juices and I just can’t imagine ever going back to the zombie like monotony of the SEO ritual.

Breaking free and spreading my wings

As I said before, this post was in no way meant to offend SEO lovers or bash SEO as a whole.  These are my personal takes on the things I dislike about SEO and how I found my way to true content marketing bliss :)
Today I couldn’t be happier with my content marketing strategy.  Well… I don’t know that I would actually call it a strategy, it’s more of just me being who I am and sharing it with the blogosphere.
If you like it, great!  If you don’t, even better! There’s nothing wrong with a little bit of confrontation every now and then. Lol.
The whole point of blogging and content marketing is to leave your original footprint and have fun doing it.  I can honestly say, that I’m actually having a Football Sunday blast blogging now and I’m beyond excited to see where it’ll take me.
I’d like to know your thoughts on SEO and hear some of your personal experiences.  What do you hate most about SEO?  What do you like most about SEO?  Let me know in the comments below.
See ya’ around the net!

4 Hidden Traffic Tips to Spike Your Traffic Stats

In this blog post, I’m going to share with you 4 hidden ways to redirect traffic to your site.  These traffic tips don’t fall into any specific category, nor do they require any fancy skills sets.  They're creative, yet simple and effective ways to instantly draw the buzz to your honeycomb.

Traffic is the one thing that will ensure your product or service gets seen.  Traffic isn’t something that you have to create, it’s already there, buzzing all around you, all you have to do is find creative ways to harvest it.

1.)  Like Facebook comments

This traffic tip is dual purpose.  It can be used to increase your Facebook “likes” as well as to ultimately drive more traffic to your blog.  While it can be effective to go through and “like” the pages of some of the gurus in your niche to get more traffic and likes to your Facebook page, it can prove to be even more effective to actually “like” the comments of the people on their fanpage.
Think about it.  Every time someone “likes” your status or a comment you’ve made, that little notification box pops up in the bottom left corner of your computer screen, right?  Naturally out of curiosity you click on that box to check out who it was that liked your comment.
The same holds true for everyone else on Facebook.  We as humans are curious creatures by nature.  By going through and “liking” individual comments of the fans on a related niche fanpage, there’s a much higher chance that people will come and check out your fanpage and “like” it as well.
This simple action will allow them to get exposed to you, your website and what you have to offer.  Once they get involved with the conversation, the chances are more likely that they’ll go and checkout your website and subscribe to your mailing list.
Going through and “liking” individual fan comments is a fairly simple task and you can like a number of them in only a few minutes per day.
5 minutes = 200 liked comments
7 days (5 minutes) = 1,400 comments
1 month (5 minutes) = between 42,000 – 42,200 comments “liked”
By these numbers, you can count on quite a few people to be curious enough to click that little notification box and checkout your page, bringing you more “likes” and ultimately more traffic to your site.
Note: When “liking” comments, it’s important that you pace yourself and not “like” comments too fast.  I also suggest that you stick to only “liking” 100 to 200 comments per day to stay within Facebook’s regulations.

2.) Blog commenting

This has always been a great dual purpose traffic generation strategy.  You drive more traffic and build quality backlinks at the same time.
Whenever you’re blog commenting to drive traffic, it’s a rule of thumb to try to get your comment to be one of the top 5 to 10 replies (preferably the top 5).  The higher up your comment, the more chances you have of your comment being seen, read and receiving a click through to your website.
However, sometimes we can miss the ball and by the time you get to a blog post there’s already a good amount of comments.  One way you can still get your comment up in the top few is by actually replying to one of the top comments.  Whenever a comment receives a reply it’s always nested right under the original comment.  This will enable you to add your input to the conversation while still leaving a highly visible comment.
Of course, you only want to do this if you really have something of value that you can add to the persons comment and the content as a whole.  Commenting a simple one liner here would not suffice (or for any blog comment that you leave).  Be sure that your comment is relative to the original reply and you’re able to truly add value and input to keep the conversation going.
Here’s another blog commenting strategy you can implement:
Right after you publish your next post, go and comment on other freshly published post about the same topic or a related topic.  You can find these posts by going to the Google Blog Search Engine and typing in the title of your post, or keywords related to it.  Google blog search will bring up all blogs related to that topic.  Be sure to sort the listings by date (starting with the most recent post).  You’ll see tons of other freshly published posts about your very same topic that you can comment on.
You might also want to take into account the amount of traffic the site gets and how engaging the community is.  The more traffic the site has, the more chances of your comment getting seen and driving you more traffic.
This strategy is also great to use if you’re having trouble getting engagement and interaction on your blog posts.  If a person takes the time to read your comment and then clicks through to your blog to see more relevant information, more than likely they’ll leave a comment on your post as well.

3.)  Start a weekly link roundup

This traffic strategy is multi-purpose and is a killer way to build more traffic to your site while building relationships with influencers in your niche.
A link roundup is simply a collection of links that you compile of the best content that you’ve come across for the week (i.e. blog posts, webpages, videos, etc.).  Link roundups are usually sent out to your list of subscribers on a weekly basis.  I decided to start my own link roundup during the relaunch of my blog and it’s done wonders for my traffic.
When starting this strategy, I suggest that you begin to submit your very bestcontent to other link roundups in your niche.  Preferably, sites that have a decent following and good amount of traffic.  You can find sites within your niche that do link roundups by doing search quires on Google’s Blog Search Engine.
Here’s some examples of some quires that you can enter to find link roundups:
  • “Link Roundup”
  • “Friday Link Roundup”
  • “Weekly Link Roundup”
  • “Monday Link Roundup”
  • “Daily Link Roundup”
You can also add specific modifiers to the quires to find roundups in your niche:
  • “Weekly Link Roundup” + marketing
  • “Weekly Link Roundup” + health and beauty
  • “Weekly Link Roundup” + weight loss
As you’re submitting your best content to several link roundups, you want to begin compiling your own list of links from either the sites that you’re submitting your links to or sites that you enjoy reading on a regular basis.
Make sure that the links that you’re collecting are current and contain truly valuable content that you feel your list of subscribers will really benefit from.  I usually collect 4 to 5 links that contain high quality content.
Doing link roundups in this way works double fold for driving traffic.  You’ll be getting traffic from the links that you submitted to other roundups, plus you’ll be sending traffic while leveraging other people’s content and diversifying your own content.
Even if the person who you included in your link roundup doesn’t do roundups themselves, freely sending traffic to people in your niche is a great way to get on their radar and start building relationships with them.  They will appreciate the free traffic and will more than likely return the favor by giving you a shout out on the social networks through a RT or FB wall share of your next post, mentioning you within their next blog post, or you may even inspire them to start their own link roundup and they’ll include you in their first edition.
You can even take this method a step further by doing link roundup swaps.  The key to getting your links accepted into a popular link roundup is by creating wildly valuable content that demands recognition   However, not every person that you submit your links to will accept you into their weekly editions.
So, what you can do is begin networking and building an alliance with people in your niche who has about the same size list/audience as you and begin doing link roundup swaps with them.  This is a good way to get more traffic, gain more exposure, and build your list and following all in one fell swoop. :)

4.)  Post your emails to your blog

This is a traffic strategy that’s been churning out great results for me.  Not to mention how well it’s been helping me grow my list.
This traffic method is really simple to do.  All it requires is some copy and pasting and some simple syndication.  You don’t have to post every email that you send your list to your blog for this to work effectively for you.  However, I would suggest that you post at least your link roundup emails and any sales driven email broadcasts.
I’ve been using this strategy with my weekly link roundups and not only has it increased my traffic and subscribers, it’s also aided me in building additional relationships with influencers.
Here’s a quick breakdown of how I structure this:
  • Compile my list of links for my link roundup and write out my email within my blog editor
  • Paste either a tracking link or a raw link pointing back to the specific post (it’s better to use a tracking link so you can keep track of the clicks each link gets).
  • Publish the  post
  • Take the first intro part of my email and modify to send it out to my list to notify them of this week’s roundup with a link pointing back to my post (this is also a great way to keep sending repeat traffic back to your blog).
  • Create a tracking link for my roundup post and share it on Twitter and Facebook
  • Put that same link on JustRetweet
  • Share my post in some related Facebook groups
Following this simple weekly routine has sent me tons of extra traffic that I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise and it’s added quite a few extra subscribers to my list as well.
Another plus to this traffic method is that every wordpress blog link that you put within your post automatically sends a trackback link to that particular post that will appear at the bottom of the post.  Wordpress will also immediately send a notification of the trackback to the owner of the blog.  This sends even more traffic, plus you catch the attention of the blogger.
This has worked for me on several occasions to get the attention of some influencers in my niche, and they’ve even dropped by and left comments on my roundup posts thanking me for including them.
This method will also work for any sales driven email broadcasts you send out.  However, you want to make sure that within the email/post that you’re providing actionable value that your readers can implement while at the same time referring to either your own or an affiliate product that will aid them in achieving the desired results.

Well there ya’ have it!

Four kick butt traffic strategies that you can begin implementing today and start seeing results tomorrow.
Be sure to “like”, share, and retweet this post if you found it helpful.
Also, leave me your feedback and thoughts about these tips in the comments below.  I’d love to hear how they work out for you.
See ya’ around the net!
